The individual, identified as Sandeep Burman, operates a small dhaba (eatery) in Dhanpuri. He informed the police that he had prepared food for tiffin supply and added two to three tomatoes, which irked his wife. The adding of tomatoes, which are selling at Rs 140 per kg, sparked heating argument between husband and wife. Soon after the arguments, her wife left the home.
Dhanpuri police station Sanjay Jaiswal confirmed the incident. Tomato prices have sky rocketed in Madya Pradesh and across the country. The prices has reached as high as Rs 150-160 per kilogram in the retail market across the country. Apart from tomatoes, almost all vegetables have experienced a surge in prices, with ladyfinger, for instance, increasing from Rs 20 to Rs 45-50 per kilogram.
Prices of other vegetables like bottle gourd, sponge gourd, and pointed gourd have also risen significantly, reaching Rs. 45-50 per kilogram. In response to the inflated vegetable prices, an innovative offer was recently made by a mobile shop owner in Ashoknagar, who provided two kilograms of tomatoes to customers purchasing a mobile device from his store.
The escalating vegetable prices have become a topic of discussion in political circles as well. Congress MLA Kalpana Verma made a statement during the monsoon session of the Assembly by wearing a garland made of tomatoes and chili. Congress workers have also staged protests in various parts of the state, expressing their discontent with the soaring vegetable prices.
