The Goa government seems to be acknowledging the concerns raised by tourists about the steep costs associated with the popular travel destination. Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho candidly stated on Saturday that Goa has become an expensive place for travelers. This acknowledgment comes amid rising complaints about exorbitant taxi fares, high room tariffs, and increased airfares, all of which contribute to making foreign destinations more attractive to tourists.

High Costs Deter Tourists

Godinho addressed taxi operators at the Manohar International Airport, urging them to reconsider their fare structures and prioritize providing excellent service to tourists. The minister highlighted the overall high pricing across the tourism sector in Goa, including hotels, taxis, and other services. He emphasized that the increased rates by airlines further compound the issue, making it more cost-effective for people to choose foreign destinations over Goa.

Goa Losing Its Appeal

Godinho pointed out that tourists carefully calculate the total cost of their holiday when deciding on a travel destination. Unfortunately, Goa finds itself pricing out of competition when compared to popular foreign tourist spots such as Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The minister expressed concern that if the perception of Goa being expensive persists, the destination may lose its allure, adversely impacting tourist footfalls.

A Call for Reflection

The transport minister urged stakeholders in the tourism industry, including airlines, hotel owners, and taxi operators, to reflect on the current situation. He emphasized the need for a collective introspection to address the issue at its core. Godinho's statement aligns with an earlier admission by Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte in January, who acknowledged that high room tariffs and airfares had resulted in a decline in visitors to Goa during the Christmas-New Year period. Khaunte had emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism practices, indicating that over-exploitation of tourism is not a viable long-term strategy.

The acknowledgment by the state government regarding the high costs associated with tourism in Goa reflects a growing realization of the challenges faced by the industry. The call for reflection and the emphasis on sustainability indicate a willingness to address these issues collaboratively. Only time will tell if these efforts will help Goa maintain its status as a sought-after travel destination.
