Pakistan's newly appointed Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, in a recent press conference in London, conveyed the government's "serious intent" to reassess trade relations with India. This statement marks a significant departure in diplomatic stance since August 2019.

Why Pakistan wants to improve trade ties with India Now?

Dar's announcement aligns with the objectives of the new government's five-year plan, which aims to rejuvenate economic ties, especially with neighboring countries like India, in order to facilitate the economic recovery of cash-strapped Pakistan. Emphasizing the economic challenges faced by Pakistan, Dar stressed the necessity of a comprehensive roadmap to lead the country towards economic prosperity.

Pakistan’s Economic Challenges

Shehbaz Sharif's coalition government faces the daunting task of addressing Pakistan's economic challenges as it takes office following the February 8 elections. Economic recovery stands as a pressing issue that demands immediate attention.

Strained Bilateral Ties

The deterioration in relations between India and Pakistan stemmed from India's abrogation of Article 370 and the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. In response, Pakistan suspended trade ties and downgraded diplomatic relations, citing these actions as detrimental to bilateral talks. Pakistan consistently urges India to reverse its actions in Kashmir for dialogue, while India asserts that such matters are internal and rejects Pakistan's demands.

India's Stance

India has reiterated its desire for normal neighborly relations with Pakistan but maintains that the responsibility lies with Islamabad to create a conducive environment, free from terror and hostility, for engagement. India also criticizes Pakistan's efforts against terrorism as insufficient and emphasizes the need for action against anti-India elements within Pakistan.

Ceasefire Agreement

Despite the strained relations, India and Pakistan reached an agreement to renew the ceasefire along the Line of Control in February 2021, indicating a potential step towards de-escalation.

Diplomatic Exchanges

In a recent diplomatic exchange, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on assuming the leadership of Pakistan's government via a post on X, sparking hopes for an improvement in diplomatic relations. In response, Sharif thanked Modi for his "felicitations" in a brief post days later.

This move by Pakistan's Foreign Minister signals a potential shift in diplomatic dynamics between the two neighboring nations, offering a glimmer of hope for the resumption of constructive dialogue and cooperation in the region.
