Who is Narain Singh Chaura, the former Khalistani militant behind the attack on Sukhbir Badal at Golden Temple?

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped a shooting incident outside the Golden Temple on Wednesday. The attack occurred while Badal was performing the duties of a ‘sewadar’ near the revered shrine. The assailant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, was overpowered on the spot by onlookers.

Badal, seated in a wheelchair, was the target of a firearm attack when Chaura attempted to shoot him at close range. A nearby sewadar acted swiftly, pushing Chaura’s hand upward, which caused the bullet to hit a wall instead. No injuries were reported, and Badal emerged unharmed from the incident.

Chaura was immediately apprehended by those present near the temple and handed over to authorities.

Who is Narain Singh Chaura?

Narain Singh Chaura, the alleged shooter, has a controversial history. A former Khalistani militant, Chaura is known for his involvement in multiple cases and was once underground. He is linked to the Burail jailbreak, during which he assisted Babbar Khalsa International members, including Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora, in escaping.

Chaura, a Panthic leader in the past, hails from Dera Baba Nanak. Witnesses reported seeing him near Badal a day prior to the incident, dressed in a white kurta and pyjamas.

The attack has raised concerns about the safety of political leaders and security measures at public places. Investigations are underway to understand the motive behind the attack and whether it was premeditated.
