West Bengal junior doctors to partially resume duties, call off 'cease-work' amidst floods in the state

West Bengal junior doctors on Friday confirmed that they will partially resume work in state-run hospitals from Saturday.

The resumption of medical duties coincides with floods that have impacted parts of West Bengal.

Junior doctors will reportedly work towards providing relief to civilians affected due to the natural disaster.


This announcement comes weeks after a longstanding agitation by resident doctors who have been protesting against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old RG Kar medical resident in August.

Earlier on Friday, Junior doctors marched to the CBI office in Salt Lake on Friday, advocating for justice in the rape-murder case of a fellow medic at RG Kar Hospital last month.

After a 41-day standoff, they declared a partial resumption of duties, beginning Saturday, which will include essential services in state-run hospitals.

To commemorate the conclusion of their 10-day protest near the state health department's headquarters, known as 'Swasthya Bhawan,' the doctors organized a procession to the CGO Complex, roughly 4 km away, urging for a swift resolution to the investigation.

"If the assurances and promises are not fulfilled, we will again start our agitation programme," one of the protesting doctors stated.

The medical staff clarified that while they would not be operating in the Outpatient Department (OPD), they would resume limited work in emergency and essential services.
