West Bengal coal scam: CBI summons alleged mastermind Anup Majhi for questioning on March 30

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Anup Majhi alleged mastermind of an illegal coal pilferage scam in the poll bound West Bengal. Majhi has been asked to appear for questioning on March 30.


The Apex Court on Thursday had restrained the CBI from arresting Majhi till April 6.



A division bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud on Thursday had ordered “the petitioner shall not be arrested until April 6. This order has been passed without going into the merit of the case. We clarify that this order will not restrain the investigation”.


It might be mentioned here that the CBI, last month, had quizzed Rujira Narula, wife of Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MP and nephew of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, for nearly one and a half hours in connection with the coal smuggling scandal.


The agency had also questioned Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law and her family members in connection with the case. The multi-crore scandal pertains to the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) mines located in West Bengal’s Kunustoria and Kajora areas.


An FIR was registered by the agency, last November, against Majhi and others for their alleged involvement in the scandal.
