West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari announces panels on corruption, women’s protection

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced the formation of two commissions — one on institutional corruption and another on the protection of SC, ST and minority women and girl children.

The Commission on institutional corruption will be led by retired Justice Biswajit Basu, while the second commission will be headed by retired Justice Samapti Chattopadhyay. Senior IPS officer Damayanti Sen will serve as the member secretary of the Commission on Women.

Park Circus violence

The West Bengal CM said, “We will not tolerate stone pelting on policemen in the state. Police and CRPF personnel sustained injuries in the Park Circus violence on Sunday.”

“I visited them to enquire about their health. The force worked very well yesterday and stopped the law and order situation from nosediving,” he said.

“The entire department and the government are standing in support of these police personnel. I appeal to people — don’t take the law into your hands. It’s a clear message of zero tolerance against rowdyism, hooliganism and vandalism. I am warning that if anyone attacks the police, we will go to every extent legally to protect them,” the CM added.

“We will not look at political party, religion or proximity to any VIP. This is no longer under the previous government. We will not tolerate this. Fear out, hope in.”

At least 40 people have been arrested in connection with the Park Circus vandalism, the CM said during his visit to the area.

“Stone pelting stopped in Kashmir; Bengal was lagging. Now it won’t. Police were scared earlier, not anymore. If anyone attacks the police, action will be taken under the BNS,” he said, alleging that the Park Circus violence was “planned”.

“Earlier, police could not function due to political interference. Now they will act according to the law,” Adhikari said. He also claimed that Kolkata Police would be reformed within six months and become “the best force”.
