Kolkata: The name of Niutan Das, reportedly listed as a voter in West Bengal and allegedly involved in Bangladesh's student movement last August, is in the process of being deleted from the state's electoral roll, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal confirmed on Friday. "As reported by the District Electoral Officer (DEO) of South 24 Parganas, an online application in Form 7 for the deletion of the individual's name from the voter list has been submitted, and the deletion process is currently underway," West Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal told ET.

On June 9, the CEO had directed the DEO and District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas to investigate the matter of a person allegedly listed as a voter in Kakdwip constituency. Das was purportedly involved in the student-led protests in Bangladesh in August 2024. ET had first reported on 10 June that the CEO had ordered an official enquiry into the case.

According to sources, multiple photographs of Niutan Das participating in the 2024 quota reform protests in Bangladesh had surfaced online.
