The India Meteorological Department has issued orange warning for coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (including Chennai and neighbouring areas), warning of heavy rainfall in coming days. The low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining South Andaman Sea moved west-northwestwards and lay over Southeast Bay of Bengal and it is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours, the IMD said.

The weather department also warned that the depression could gradually intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal around 3rd of December. Thereafter, the cyclonic storm could move northwestwards and reach North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts around the early morning of 04th December as a cyclonic storm.

As a result of the depression over Bay of Bengal, the weather department forecasts light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over north Coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry from 1 December to 4th December and light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh during 3rd to 4th December.


Rains have been lashing Chennai and its neighbouring areas , leading to inundation in many parts. Schools in the city and neighbouring districts were closed.

Meanwhile, the Kanchipuram District administration has announced to increase in the discharge of water from Chembarambakkam Lake from 2500 cusecs to 6000 cusecs.

With Tamil Nadu receiving continuous rainfall, the lake's storage had increased to 22.53 feet as against the capacity of 24 feet. The lake has a water capacity of 3.645 TMC. A flood warning has been issued for low-lying areas and six villages along the banks of the Adyar River as the water was released from Chembarambakkam Lake.
