He was speaking at a media briefing, ahead of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2023, which is scheduled in November this year.
“Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employs 55,000 people in West Bengal and will add another 15,000 in the new campus.” If we have 65,000 people in TCS, it will be larger than Bengaluru," Mitra said, adding that Jio is setting up a data centre, while Cognizant is employing 22,000 people, and Wipro 12,000 people in the state.
He added that the state will unveil many industry friendly policy in this summit to make Bengal next investment hub, which has the advantage of proximity to Bangladesh and Bhutan.
“No target has been fixed for this year, but we are hopeful that it will be close to last year’s levels. Investments in Information Technology, manufacturing, exports is a sure way of growing the state’s economy. Today, the state’s economy is the fifth largest in the country and is more than $200 billion,” he added.
Citing an example of Titagarh Wagon factory, he added that the company in consortium with BHEL is currently engaged in manufacture of 80 Vande Bharat Express trains, worth Rs 10,000 crore.
He added that Reliance, which had committed Rs 5,000 crore for the state, ended up investing Rs 10,000 crore and has expressed great interest in the retail sector.
The summit will see participation of corporate leaders, business delegations, entrepreneurs, and consultants to know about the investment ecosystem of West Bengal.
