“Kerala will open a new chapter of resilience,” the CM said in a post on X. The township is a significant step in rehabilitating survivors of the devastating landslide that struck Mundakkai and Chooralmala on July 30, 2024, which killed about 400 people and displaced hundreds more.
Vijayan pledged his government’s commitment to rebuilding the lives of victims. "This is not merely an inauguration. It is a solemn declaration that we honor our word and rebuild together," he said. "When disaster struck and families lost everything, we resolved that Kerala would stand united. Even when the support that was rightfully due did not fully come our way, we chose not to wait. With the strength of our people, we moved ahead."
The township in Kalpetta will initially provide 178 families with a safe home and title deeds, with all 327 beneficiaries expected to receive land and homes before the next monsoon. According to the CM, the construction of the remaining homes is nearing completion.
Vijayan commented on the challenges faced during this endeavor. "There were obstacles, doubts, and attempts to diminish the effort. But the people stood firmly with the state government, and together they pressed forward without retreating. What rises in Kalpetta is not just a township—it is dignity restored and Kerala's unbreakable spirit."
Law and Industries Minister P Rajeeve added that the township was built through collective effort and public support, standing as a "powerful symbol of survival and solidarity." He emphasized that the project is more than rehabilitation; it is a testament to Kerala's determination to rebuild lives with dignity and a reminder that unity makes the state rise stronger.
“From tragedy to hope, Kerala has chosen to rebuild lives with determination and dignity. This is more than rehabilitation. It is a reminder that when Kerala stands united, we rise stronger and move forward together,” the law minister said.
In August 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-hit regions and visited the affected families at relief camps. Kerala had sought Rs 2000 crore from the Centre.
