Union government today said that the Kerala government was warned seven days ahead of the tragic landslide which claimed more than 150 lives. Speaking about the early warning system in Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister said that Government of India had alerted the government of Kerala seven days before the incident, and then on July 24 and 25 too early warning was given.

Kerala government was alerted with early warning on July 23 about heavy rains.

"They kept on talking about early warning. I want to clarify that on July 23, the government of India gave an early warning to the government of Kerala, which was 7 days before the incident, and then on July 24 and 25 too early warning was given. On July 26, a warning was given that there was a chance of heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm, and there were chances of landslides, there could be mudflow and people could lose lives in this," Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Rajya Sabha.


Over 150 people have lost life in Wayanad landslides.

Wayanad Landslide Survivors Relocated

Survivors of the Wayanad landslide have been relocated to relief camps throughout the district. At a camp set up in a local school, those affected are sharing their harrowing experiences. Sarojini, a resident of Chooranmala, described her ordeal during the landslide. Alone at home that night, she was trapped when the landslide hit. “I couldn’t open the door as it was jammed. I yelled for help, and eventually, people arrived and broke the door with an axe to rescue me,” she said.

In Meppadi, relief camps are collecting essential items for the victims. Brigadier Arjun Seagan of the Para Regimental Training Centre reported that 500 to 600 personnel from various agencies are conducting rescue operations. The Indian Army has evacuated over 1,000 people using makeshift bridges and human effort, despite challenging weather conditions. The Indian Air Force has also assisted with search and rescue missions.

The landslides struck Wayanad early Tuesday morning, with the first at 2 am and the second at 4:10 am, causing widespread damage. Many areas, including Meppadi, Mundakkai, and Chooranmala, have been cut off, and roads have been destroyed. The Vellarmala GVH School was entirely buried. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing.
