Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the upcoming BRICS Summit in India and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a virtual interaction with Indian reporters.

Peskov also said Russia supports the idea of inviting new countries to join different formats of cooperation within BRICS, signalling Moscow's backing for wider participation in the grouping.

Putin's participation in the summit comes as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. India is chairing BRICS in 2026 under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability". The expanded grouping currently has 11 full members, with the summit expected to focus on areas including trade, finance, technology, energy security and reforms in global governance.

Peskov added that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on Friday, with trade and economic cooperation taking center stage on the agenda.

The Kremlin's remarks also underline the importance of the India-Russia engagement on the sidelines of the summit, with Putin and Modi set to hold bilateral discussions during his visit.
