Vijay's TVK govt exempts Public (Law and Order) Department from the RTI Act in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay-led TVK government exempted the Public (Law and Order) Department from the Right to Information (RTI) Act on Sunday.

The state government, issued a Gazette notification under Section 24(4) of the RTI Act, classifying the department as an Intelligence and Security Organisation.

This implies that information on communal incidents, political agitations, police custody deaths, and other law and order matters will no longer be publicly accessible through RTI applications.

RTI Act is a law to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens wherein they can secure access to information under the control of public authorities. The Act is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority, the constitution of a Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions.

Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam

CM Vijay is set to launch the state government's one-gram gold ring scheme for newborns, titled the 'Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme) on Monday.

Under the scheme, one-gram gold rings will be presented to eligible children born in government hospitals across the southern state.

"Starting from 22.06.2026, the scheme to provide a 1-gram gold ring to all children born in government hospitals will be inaugurated tomorrow by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. S. Joseph Vijay," said the Tamil Nadu CMO.

For the first phase rollout, the Tamil Nadu government has procured 1.28 lakh gold rings, and the welfare scheme will cover eligible newborns born on or after June 22, 2026.
