The hospital said that the Chavan also suffered cardiac arrest due to respiratory failure and end-stage renal disease. A multidisciplinary team of doctors provided comprehensive treatment to the MP and he was on ventilator support too.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole expressed his condolences and shock on the demise of the leader.

"The news of the demise of a senior leader of Congress party, MP of Nanded Lok Sabha Constituency Vasantraoji Chavan is very shocking. He always remained loyal to the Congress party even in adverse conditions and brought the idea of the Congress party home...The entire Congress party is with the Chavan family in this grief," he said.

Chavan began his political journey in 1978 as the Sarpanch of Naigaon village. He rose through the ranks to become the President of Zilla Parishad and later served over 16 years in both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature.

In 2014, Chavan joined the Congress and was elected to the Nanded Lok Sabha seat, revitalizing the area after Ashok Chavan departed to join the Bharatiya Janata Party earlier this year. Chavan's victory demonstrated to Congress members that the party remained viable in Nanded, buoying the Maha Vikas Aghadi's strong performance in the LS elections.
