For the first time, all fish and meat shops within the Varanasi Municipal Corporation limits will remain closed during Navratri. The decision was approved unanimously at an executive meeting of the municipal corporation on Thursday. Announcing the decision on Friday, Mayor Ashok Tiwari said, "Considering the religious significance of Kashi and sentiments of the devotees, it has been decided to close all fish and meat shops during Navratri."

Strict action for violations

Any shopkeeper found violating the order will face strict action, the mayor said. The eight-day Navratri festival will begin on March 30 and conclude on April 6.

Meerut Police warns action for offering Namaz on roads

Meanwhile, Meerut police have warned against unauthorized roadside prayers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and the last Friday prayers of Ramzan. Violators will face legal action, including potential passport cancellation and driving license revocation. This announcement prompted a reaction from Union minister and RLD chief Jayant Singh, who posted on X: "Policing towards Orwellian 1984!"

Police stated that Eid prayers should be held at local mosques or designated Eidgahs. SP City Ayush Vikram Singh said, “Last year, some individuals defied the directives and prayed on the roads, leading to action against more than 80 people. This time, anyone violating the rule will face strict legal action.” He added that notices have already been issued. Consequences for violations could include passport and license revocation. Singh explained that obtaining a new passport after revocation would require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the court.

Meerut SSP Vipin Tada said security agencies are working with the district administration, religious leaders, and local stakeholders to ensure peaceful celebrations. Meetings have been held, and directives issued. Tada warned against spreading rumors or inciting unrest on social media, stating, “Strict action will be taken against those trying to spread rumours or incite unrest through social media. We are keeping a close watch on social media platforms, and any attempt to disrupt communal harmony will be dealt with firmly.” The Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed, and flag marches are being conducted.

Drones will be used for aerial surveillance, and local intelligence teams are monitoring the situation, according to Singh. Uniformed and plainclothes officers will be stationed at sensitive locations.
