A wedding was called off in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor over an escalated argument during the ‘joota churai (shoe-stealing)' ritual. This was the second such case in a week.

A scuffle broke out between the two families after the bride's sister demanded Rs 15,000 to return the shoes of the groom.

The groom's side, however, offered Rs 2,100, leading to a heated argument. The situation escalated and the wedding was called off after a few hours.

Police were called late at night and they managed to come to an agreement between the two families. However, But, it did not work out.

Local villagers said Mohd Asif's two daughters were getting married in a joint ceremony on Sunday. One groom came from Chandpur and returned home with the bride, while another baraat came from Harsh Vada. During the said ritual, the groom, Rizwan, had a row with the guests of the bride's side after the demand for Rs 15,000.

A similar incident was reported on April 7, in Bijnor's Garhmal village, where a Rs 50,000 demand during the same ritual resulted in the wedding being called off.
