Urban Flood Info System: IIT developing tech to mitigate catastrophic urban flooding
Researchers at IIT-Hyderabad are working on an Urban Flood Information System (UFIS) to reduce the impact of urban flooding in Hyderabad. The team aims to collect and analyze flood-related data, simulate rainfall, study flood depth and extent, and...

The leader of the study, Satish Kumar Regonda, expressed the importance of such a system in making cities more resilient to floods. He acknowledged the excitement that heavy rain brings, especially during childhood when it meant no school. However, he emphasized the significant consequences of heavy rainfall, including damage and loss of life. Regonda believes that integrating meteorological, hydrological, and stakeholder-relevant aspects through UFIS can enhance flood awareness and minimize the impact of floods.
One of the challenges faced by the researchers is the lack of crucial data, such as detailed rainfall measurements and flood flow data. To establish a reliable UFIS, collecting flood-related data becomes a priority. Regonda's team has been working on various dimensions to address urban flooding in Hyderabad. They have focused on understanding rainfall patterns, weather conditions that lead to rain in the city, and alternative rainfall products that can be used for flood-related applications.
The researchers have several plans in progress, including weather, hydrology, and hydraulic modeling at an urban scale. Additionally, they are exploring ways to disseminate real-time flood information through social media platforms. These initiatives aim to provide timely and accurate information to residents and authorities during flood situations.
