MLAs and MLCs in UP, mostly from BJP, have contributed close to Rs 30 crore out of their local area development fund towards strengthening oxygen supply in the state since the state amended rules for utilisation of funds during the peak of Covid second wave in April.

According to data accessed by ET, a total of 135 MLAs/MLCs, almost entirely from the BJP owing to its dominance in the 403 member assembly, have paid a total of Rs 46.82 crore under heads like the UP Covid Care Fund, building of oxygen plants, buying oxygen concentrators as well as other medical equipment in the current year. Out of this total contribution, `24.37 crore, or more than half is being utilised towards building oxygen plants.
