UP mandates display of outlet owner details, enforces strict food safety norms amid spitting incidents

In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and public safety, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed that names and addresses of operators, proprietors, and managers must be clearly displayed at all food establishments across the state. Chefs and waiters at these establishments will also be required to wear masks and gloves, and CCTV installation will be made mandatory in hotels and restaurants.

Food Contamination Cases Prompt Action

This directive follows several alarming incidents of food contamination reported in the state. On September 12, a video went viral showing a teenager spitting on rotis while preparing them at an eatery in Saharanpur district, resulting in the arrest of the establishment's owner. Similarly, a juice vendor in Ghaziabad was arrested last week for allegedly mixing urine with fruit juice. In another case in June, two men in Noida were detained for selling juice contaminated with their saliva.

Government’s Call for Stringent Measures

During a meeting, Adityanath expressed grave concern over the increasing cases of food adulteration, emphasizing that such actions are not only disgusting but also pose significant health risks. "The presence of human waste in food items is not only disgusting but poses a serious health risk," he stated, calling for severe punitive action against offenders.

Inspections and Law Amendments

The Chief Minister instructed authorities to conduct thorough investigations and verification of all food-related establishments, including hotels, dhabas, and restaurants across the state. He also advocated for amendments to the Food Safety and Standards Act to enhance public health safeguards. “Dhabas, restaurants, and food establishments must undergo thorough inspections, and police verification of all employees should be mandatory,” Adityanath said. “It is crucial to ensure the purity and sanctity of the food being served to the public.”

Ensuring Public Safety

Adityanath highlighted the detrimental impact of food adulteration on public health and underscored the need for concrete measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. He noted that earlier this year, the state government introduced regulations requiring food vendors along the Kanwar Yatra routes to display their names, a move that faced criticism but was defended as essential for transparency.

The recent directives are seen as a continuation of efforts by the state government to ensure that food served to the public is safe and that those responsible for contamination are held accountable.
