Chaudhary Charan Singh was born in a family of farmers on 23 December 1902.
Often called as 'champion of India's farmers' by many historians and farmer leaders, he went on to occupy the country’s top elected position in 1979. His stay at the top was a short one for only 170 days. He was India’s PM between 28 July 1979 and 14 January 1980.
Chaudhary Charan Singh introduced important policies and played a key role in implementing them to improve the income and lives of farmers in the country. One of them was the Zamindari Abolition Act, of 1950, which is considered as one of the first major agrarian reforms of the Government of India after independence.
