Unrest in Bengal's North Dinajpur district over teen's rape and murder

North Dinajpur district's Kaliagunj turned into a warzone on Friday over alleged rape and murder of a teenaged girl in the area. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken cognizance of the incident in Uttar Dinajpur and a fact-finding team will be sent to conduct enquiry.

“NCPCR has taken cognisance of News Reports of gang rape and murder of a Dalit girl child in …Uttar Dinajpur of West Bengal. A fact finding team will be visiting there to conduct an inquiry, NCPCR Chairperson Priyank Kanoongo tweeted.

Tyres were burnt and stones were pelted even as local people protested after the teenaged girl, who went missing on Thursday evening, was found dead. Enraged mob got engaged in a scuffle with police when they tried to recover the body and RAF was deployed to bring the situation under control.


The girl was allegedly raped and murdered after she went missing last evening, people in the know said. Her body was found on Friday morning from a water body near her house. When police came to recover her body, local people expressed their grievance and protested. They pelted stones and vandalized the area, when police tried to disperse the protesting mob and recover the body.

Local people demanded that they will allow the body only after the accused gets arrested, people in the know said. Following this, people got engaged in a scuffle with police and police lathicharge and RAF was deployed.

The girl was a resident of Kaligunj’s Malgunj Panchayat area. However, though Leader of Opposition (LoP) in state assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that she was from the tribal Rahbonshi community, it could not be ascertained.

LoP Adhikari tweeted, “Another rape & murder of a Minor Girl in WB. The dead body of a Class X student; belonging to the Rajbongshi Community, from Kaliaganj; Uttar Dinajpur was found in such condition. Days after Tribal ladies were punished with the atonement ritual, this happens to a Rajbongshi girl.”
