Union Minister Sonowal announces Central assistance, high-level team visit for flood-hit Assam

Guwahati: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal expressed deep concern over the severe flood situation in Assam and said both the Central and state governments stand firmly with every citizen affected by the disaster.

Sonowal said this year’s floods have assumed a serious proportion in Assam. More than 742,000 people across 11 districts have been affected so far. Extensive damage has been reported to agricultural land, livestock and commercial establishments, while nearly 47 people have lost their lives.

He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls. He also noted that the Assam government is continuing rescue operations on a war footing to trace those who remain missing.

Sonowal said the flood situation in Assam was discussed in detail during the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today. He added that the Centre and the Assam government have maintained close coordination since the onset of the floods, and the Central government has assured Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of all necessary assistance.

Sonowal further announced that a high-level team comprising officials from various Central ministries will soon visit Assam. The delegation will hold meetings with the state government and conduct an extensive assessment of the damage in the flood-affected areas. Based on its findings, the Union Cabinet has decided to extend special financial assistance to the state.

Appreciating the prompt response of the Assam government under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sonowal said ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, panchayat representatives and district administrations have worked in close coordination to carry out rescue and relief operations. A total of 255 relief camps has been set up, while 2,023 villages have been affected by the floods. Rescue and relief efforts are continuing in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Tinsukia districts.

Sonowal appealed to people from all sections of society, social organisations, voluntary groups and individuals across the country to stand with flood-affected families during this difficult period.

“This is a time for compassion, collective responsibility and solidarity. Together, we can overcome this disaster through our shared efforts. The Central government will continue to extend every possible support for the relief, rehabilitation and recovery of flood-affected people in Assam,” Sonowal said.
