Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai reviewed the prevailing security situation and the ongoing construction work of the border fence along the India-Myanmar border with Manipur.

Manipur roughly shares a 400 km long border. Earlier the Manipur government had decided to strengthen security along its international border to check crimes and set up more police outposts. The state government also plans to curb the illegal peddling of drugs, rare wildlife and various contraband products.

Chief minister N Biren Singh recently said more outposts would be set up along the India-Myanmar border to check illegal immigration, smuggling activities, and cross border crime.

Five districts in Manipur share an unfenced and porous border with Myanmar. The Manipur government is advocating that the free movement regime with Myanmar needs to be reviewed.
