Union Home Minister Amit Shah to inaugurate four major road projects in Delhi on September 29

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to inaugurate four major road infrastructure projects on September 29, including the Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor, Delhi Cabinet minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Friday.

According to the Delhi Public Works Department Minister Singh, Shah will also lay down the foundation stone for two new flyovers -- Modi Mill to Kalkaji and Savitri Cinema half flyover -- on September 29.

"The Mukarba Chowk underpass, which has been completed, will also be inaugurated on the same day by the home minister. The projects altogether will be a major step towards resolving the traffic congestion problems in the city," Singh said.


The Barapullah-Phase 3 corridor, which is the biggest of the four projects, aims to provide seamless connectivity between East and South Delhi, linking Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and AIIMS via signal-free carriageways. The new flyover will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, completing a stretch of around 9 km.

Originally approved in 2014 and initiated in 2015, the project was initially scheduled for completion in 2017. However, it faced multiple delays and significant cost overruns, with the revised project cost now at approximately Rs 1,635 crore.

In South Delhi, the PWD is extending the Modi Mill flyover to the Kalkaji Temple flyover and constructing additional half-flyovers at key intersections to create a 7.2-km signal-free corridor to the IIT Gate. It will have three lanes in both directions, enabling smoother and uninterrupted traffic flow.

The third project is the construction of a half-flyover beside the existing Savitri Cinema, which will be a 435-metre three-lane single carriageway.

Initially approved by the UTTIPEC in 2017, the project had been facing delays due to lack of financial and administrative approvals from the government.

This flyover is expected to bring relief from traffic congestion for commuters going towards Nehru Place, Okhla and other areas, as the PWD has planned the expansion of the existing single carriageway into a dual carriageway.

Both the Modi Mill and Savitri Cinema flyovers are being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 371.75 crore.

"Once operational, the flyovers will provide signal-free movement, improve traffic speeds, and eliminate congestion at key junctions, particularly at Captain Gaur Marg-Outer Ring Road and Outer Ring Road-GK-II Road," a government official said.

The fourth project is the Mukarba Chowk underpass in North Delhi, which has been completed. It comprises three underpasses near Gate Number 3 of Haiderpur Badli Mor Metro station, falling under Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency.

The project on Outer Ring Road came to a halt in 2022 due to the COVID pandemic and has now been completed.
