Chemicals and fertilisers minister DV Sadananda Gowda has urged urea plants in the country to set up oxygen plants in their premises to produce medical-grade oxygen needed by Covid-19 patients. This follows the initiative of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd. (Iffco), the country’s largest fertiliser maker, to set up four such oxygen plants in its facilities.

The oxygen plants will help the country meet the growing requirement of medical-grade oxygen amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Gowda said.

“Kudos to @IFFCO_PR for dedicating their four plants for production of medical oxygen. I request other urea units to kindly follow the suit wherever possible. Government is taking all measures to ramp up production and availability of medical oxygen,” Gowda tweeted.

There are more than 30 urea plants in the country, including Iffco’s four plants at Aonla and Phulpur (Uttar Pradesh), Kalol (Gujarat) and Paradeep (Odisha).

Iffco said it will invest Rs 30 crore to set up the oxygen plants. The plant at Kalol is likely to start production in two weeks.
