Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine President Zelenskyy dials PM Modi, urges India to give it political support in UNSC
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked for political support in UN Security Council.

"Spoke with Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi. Informed of the course of Ukraine repulsing Russian aggression," Zelenskuyy said in a tweet.

"More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support in UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together!" he said.

PM Modi conveyed India’s deep concern for the safety and security of Indian citizens, including students, present in Ukraine.

He sought facilitation by Ukrainian authorities to expeditiously and safely evacuate Indian citizens.

India on Saturday abstained on a US-sponsored United Nations Security Council resolution that “deplores in the strongest terms” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine, with New Delhi saying dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes and voicing “regret” that the path of diplomacy was given up.

At the UNSC meeting, India urged that all efforts are made for the immediate cessation of violence and hostilities adding that dialogue is the only answer to settling disputes.

"India is deeply disturbed by recent turn of developments in Ukraine. No solution can ever be arrived at the cost of human lives," India's PR to UN, TS Tirumurti said.

Eleven counties voted in favour of the resolution while three countries, including India, abstained.

Meanwhile, Russia used its veto power blocking the resolution but western nations said the resolution seeks to show Moscow's isolation on the global stage for its invasion and actions against Ukraine.

Modi on Thursday called up Russian President Putin and appealed to him for “immediate cessation of violence and return to the path of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue”.
