UK returnee tests Covid positive in Kolkata

The first Omicron case in West Bengal was detected in Kolkata on Friday after a young woman, who returned from the United Kingdom to Kolkata, tested positive.

The first Omicron case in West Bengal was detected in Kolkata on Friday after a young woman, who returned from the United Kingdom to Kolkata, tested positive. After initial treatment at the government-run Beliaghata's Infectious Disease Hospital, the patient went to a private hospital for institutional quarantine. The specimen has been sent for genome sequencing.

"One patient, who came from the UK, was found positive for Covid. The specimen has been sent for genome sequencing. The patient was initially kept at Infectious Disease hospital Beliaghata. Later, she went to a private facility for institutional quarantine. The condition of the patient is stable," said Ajoy Chakraborty, Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH).

After the patient arrived in Kolkata, she was tested for the variant. "Symptoms in the patient are minimal," said health department sources. Separate Isolation wards have been opened in Beliaghata ID Hospital. Initially, the patient, a resident of Alipore in South Kolkata, was taken to the government hospital after she tested positive for the Omicron variant.
