Aadhaar holders can now add or update their email address directly through the Aadhaar mobile application without visiting an enrolment centre, after the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) introduced a free in-app service aimed at making profile updates simpler and more secure.

The facility, available exclusively through the Aadhaar app from July 1 for a period of six months, allows users to update their email addresses at no cost, UIDAI said in a statement on Friday.

"The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has allowed people to add or update their email ID in Aadhaar directly through the Aadhaar App, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar centre," the authority said.

The new feature has seen strong early adoption, with more than 250,000 users updating their email addresses within two days of the service going live, according to the statement.

UIDAI said linking an email address with Aadhaar enables users to receive real-time notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is made, improving transparency and strengthening security.

"Linking email with Aadhaar helps in receiving real-time email notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is executed. It enhances transparency and provides an additional layer of security by enabling Aadhaar number holders to stay informed about the use of their Aadhaar for any purpose," it said.

The authority also highlighted the growing adoption of its revamped Aadhaar app, which has been downloaded more than 31 million (3.1 crore) times within five months of its launch.

According to UIDAI, over four million users have updated their mobile numbers through the app so far, while around one million have used it to update their address, reflecting increasing reliance on digital self-service options for Aadhaar-related changes.
