Tripura BJP MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Kumar Saha, who are staunch critics of chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, resigned from the assembly and the party and are expected to join the Congress.

On Monday, Roy Barman and Saha submitted their resignation as MLAs to the speaker and said they have also sent their resignation letters to BJP state president Manik Saha.

Both leaders, who were in the Congress before they defected to the Trinamool Congress and then the BJP, later left for New Delhi, where they are likely to meet political leaders.

"We are going to Delhi today (Monday) and will come back here on Saturday; then we will tell you everything in detail about our future political course," Roy Barman told the media after submitting his resignation to speaker Ratan Chakraborty.

He said the BJP government led by Deb had failed.

"An autocratic rule has been prevailing in the state. A reign of terror has been going on in the state. People are in serious distress. We want to work for the people as we are unable to do this while remaining in BJP," he said.
