Two tribal women were allegedly stripped and assaulted by a group of women in a rural market in Malda district of West Bengal this week.

BJP leaders have lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee-led government over the incident, which has come out at a time when a viral video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur has shocked the country and attracted opposition ire.

West Bengal women and child development minister Sashi Panja accused BJP of politicising the issue and said the police have filed a suo motu case and started a probe into the incident.

At least five persons have been arrested in this connection.

The incident seen in a purported video that went viral happened on July 18, local people aware of the development told ET.

The two women, who went to market to sell lemons, had allegedly stolen something from the rural market and were beaten up brutally by a group of women, they said.

Family members of the victims claimed that despite being stripped and beaten up with shoes, the two women were arrested by police after the incident.

Slamming Panja's comments, Union minister Anurag Thakur said, "In Bengal, when women are stripped and beaten up...there is an attempt to divert the issue... So is in Bihar and Rajasthan. Where is 'Mamataji ki mamata'? "
