Guwahati: Two suspected cadres of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an affiliate of the Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were arrested in Assam on Monday.

While Musadik Hussain was arrested in Morigaon and Ikramul Islam was arrested from neighbouring Nagaon. TThe police were looking for the duo after interrogation of cleric Mufti Mustafa, who had been earlier arrested.

Assam Police have arrested around 40 operatives of Jihad outfit. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the state assembly informed the house that 114 suspected jihadis have been arrested from different parts of the state, of which 40 have been nabbed this year.


The chief minister stated in another written reply to a question from leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia said that 10 persons who have been found to have links with madrassas.

Sarma stated 65 were members of banned terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and nine were from Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and 40 of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), who were arrested since March this year.

“Out of the 114 cadres, the cases of 23 arrested people were transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for probe. Of the remaining 91 nabbed people, the cases of 54 were still pending investigation, while charge sheets were filed in the cases of the remaining 37 and they were undergoing trial,” Sarma added.

He added, Foreign nationals are involved in this and Bangladesh is the most prominent one.”
