Two Manipur Police commandos were killed and two sustained bullet wounds when suspected armed militants attacked the security forces in Moreh on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Manipur police said, "Early morning, armed militants orchestrated a violent attack on the state forces, employing firearms and explosives in Moreh, Tengnoupal district. In the incident, one personnel of 6th Manipur Rifles, Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei, was martyred while three police personnel sustained injuries. Security forces are presently engaging the inimical elements."

Later in the day, one more security personnel was killed in an attack, said officials.Somorjit Meetei hails from Malom area of Imphal West district.


A senior police official said that when the security personnel tried to shift the three injured police personnel to the hospital for medical treatment, some tribals, including women, obstructed and clashed with the forces during which a woman was killed and few other locals injured in Moreh, along the Myanmar border.

Heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and the suspected militants was reported in three different locations in the Moreh region. The militants also fired rocket-propelled grenade shells at the security forces.

Tensions run high in the bordering areas and additional security forces, including Assam Rifles have rushed to the areas to quell the situation. The district administration imposed a curfew in the trouble-torn Tengnoupal district from Tuesday afternoon.

"Following inputs of likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquillity and grave danger to human lives and property within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal district, a total curfew was imposed in the district," a government notification said.

Since December 30, at least 10 Manipur police commandos and a BSF trooper have been injured in different incidents of attacks by suspected Kuki militants in Moreh.
