An Ahmedabad family is in shock after two young daughters died due to food poisoning after eating dosa.
A tragic incident in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda area has left investigators puzzled after two young sisters, a three-month-old infant and her four-year-old sibling, died within two days, while their parents fell ill and were hospitalised. The family suspects food poisoning linked to dosa batter bought from a local dairy, but police say the case is far from clear and are waiting for forensic reports to confirm what really happened.

Family points to batter, but police is not convinced

The children, Raha Prajapati (3 months) and Mishri Prajapati (4), died on separate days — the infant on Saturday and the elder sister on Sunday. Their parents, Vimal Prajapati and Bhavna Prajapati, are currently admitted to KD Hospital and are said to be stable.

According to family members, Vimal had brought home about 3 kg of idli-dosa batter from a dairy on IOC Road on April 1. The family ate dosas that night. By the next morning, all four began vomiting and feeling uneasy, triggering alarm at home.

The family believes the batter may have caused the illness. However, police officials say they are not ruling out other possibilities.

Infant’s death raises serious doubts

What has made the case unusual is the death of the three-month-old infant, who was not eating solid food.

A senior police officer pointed out the contradiction, saying, "Doctors are shocked at how such a young infant died. If she was affected through breastfeeding, the mother's condition would have been more serious. The parents are not critical, but they are under observation in the ICU."

This detail has prompted investigators to look beyond the initial suspicion of food poisoning.

Grandfather recounts final hours

The children’s grandfather, Gaurishankar Prajapati, described how the situation unfolded rapidly.

"The infant developed severe convulsions and died during treatment. The elder child was briefly discharged but had to be rushed back when her health worsened. She could not be saved," he said.

His account highlights how quickly the children’s condition deteriorated compared to the parents.

Delay in reporting adds to mystery

The case became more complicated after police found that the infant’s death was not immediately reported. The family conducted the last rites without informing authorities.

It was only after the elder child’s condition worsened and she died the next day that the Chandkheda police were alerted.

Police inspector J K Makwana said an accidental death case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing. "The findings now hinge largely on the forensic report. So far, no toxic or suspicious substance has been recovered from the house," he said.

Dairy owner rejects allegations

The dairy owner, Ketan Patel, has denied any link between the batter and the deaths. He said the same batch was sold to multiple customers without any complaints.

"We sell over 100–125 kg of batter daily. No other customer has reported any issue, and even our family consumed it," he told reporters.

Officials from the forensic science laboratory and the food and drugs department have collected samples from both the house and the dairy. Investigators also noted that most of the batter — nearly 2.7 kg — had been returned, with only a small portion consumed.
