Tuhin Kanta Pandey
Tuhin Kanta Pandey took charge as the eleventh chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Saturday.

He was welcomed by all the four whole-time members of Sebi - Ashwani Bhatia, Ananth Narayan, Amarjeet Singh and Kamlesh Varshney - at the market regulator's headquarters in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex in the afternoon.

A career bureaucrat, Pandey replaces Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year term ended on Friday. Buch was not present to welcome Pandey when he arrived as she is down with Covid.

Dressed in a dark blue blazer and striped shirt, Pandey told reporters that Sebi is a robust market institution that has been built over the years.

"We have four objectives. We work for trust, we work for transparency, teamwork and for technology. We will continue to create one of the best market institutions in the world," Pandey said before going upstairs to sign-in. He has been appointed as Sebi chairman for three years.

He emphasised the importance of trust that Sebi holds.

"We hold the trust of the people of India, Parliament, government, investors and industry," Pandey said.

When asked if his leadership style would be different to that of a private sector individual, he said: "We are not going to comment on anything, anyone, or any style. We are a team here, and this team will work."

Buch was the first woman chairperson to be appointed as Sebi chief from the private sector.
