The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is trying to capture "creeping" and "killer acquisitions" in the digital market through deal values, its chairperson Ravneet Kaur said on Wednesday.

"We are trying to keep in mind that there are these zero-priced digital models, business models, which are being operated, so the asset turnover thresholds may not be there. So, we are now trying to capture creeping acquisitions, killer acquisitions through the deal value," she said.

"This is really customized for the Indian scenario and how we have to protect our ecosystem," Kaur said at a CII event, highlighting the antitrust regulator's bid to firm up models to ensure fair competition in the market, keeping in mind sensitivities and interests peculiar to India.

The CCI doesn't intend to block mergers and acquisitions, Kaur said, adding that the regulator views these "in a very facilitative manner".

While regulators in some jurisdictions have blocked the deals that they thought would jeopardise fair competition in the market, the CCI looks at structural and behavioural remedies to ensure there is no contravention of rules and regulations, she indicated. -Our Bureau
