'Try driving in Bangalore' and check this: Zolo CEO highlights city's traffic congestion

Dr. Nikhil Sikri, co-founder and CEO of Zolo, recently shared a post on Bengaluru traffic on social media. Zolo which operates Zolostays, which claims to be India's largest co-living platform. Dr Sikri should be very much familiar with the traffic situation in India's Silicon Valley as Zolo is headquartered in the city. His post drew a lot of attention in social media.

In a LinkedIn post, Dr Sikri pointed out that Google Maps had been displaying the same estimated arrival time every five minutes, drawing attention to Bengaluru traffic.

Bengaluru has been ranked among the most congested cities in the world in terms of traffic, according to a traffic index report published by Dutch location technology specialist TomTom. Bengaluru was ranked as the second most congested city center in the world in 2022.

The newly elected Congress regime in Karnataka recently launched a portal, called Brand Bengaluru, to seek suggestions from residents on Bengaluru's development. According to the portal, "Brand Bengaluru envisions a city where pedestrian-friendly roads take center stage, prioritizing the safety and convenience of its residents. Well-planned sidewalks, dedicated cycling lanes, and green spaces encourage active transportation and promote healthier lifestyles. Efficient transportation systems and smart traffic management ensure a faster and seamless commute, reducing congestion and travel times. Integrated public transportation networks, including buses and metro lines, provide convenient and accessible options for all residents."

Many prominent citizens have welcomed the idea. Former Infosys director TV Mohandas Pai told ET that the wisdom of the crowd is very important in a democracy for good policy.

In a recent Twitter exercise conducted by Times of India, participants highlighted the the issue of traffic in Bengaluru. Other participants highlighted the issue of waterlogging in many areas. Though participants said that roads need to be widened, trees shouldn't be recklessly chopped off in the process. Some participants also called for the need to implement zoning to prevent uncontrolled commercial expansion.
