Sixth schedule body, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in first of its kind move will constitute its own police force to deal with the petty crimes.

TTAADC Chairman Jagadhish Debbarma said that necessary proposals will be placed in the two-day council session, beginning on Friday.

Debbarma said, “A bill was passed in 1994 by the TTAADC to constitute a separate unarmed police force. It became an act after the then governor Siddheswar Prasad gave his assent in 1997. The Governor had asked the TTAADC to frame necessary rules for the purpose. Now we will do it.”

Debbarma said separate police will be mandated to deal with petty crimes and disputes.

The council accounts for two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 sq km area and has a population of 12,16,000 people.

Once this becomes a reality, TTAADC will be the first such body to have its own police force. There are 10 autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Northeast India.
