Tripura holds key meet to enforce import restrictions on Bangladeshi goods

Tripura's Industries and Commerce Department's Director Shailesh Kumar Yadav held the meeting with officials from the customs department, BSF, immigration officials and representatives of the traders' associations.
The central government had on May 17 imposed port restrictions on the import of a few Bangladeshi goods, such as readymade garments and processed food items.
A senior ICP official said that Yadav informed the meeting that essential items like fish, LPG, stone chips and edible oil remain unaffected. Trade representatives welcomed the move as a measure of national interest and committed to compliance.
Tripura's Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma had recently said that imports from Bangladesh into Tripura had increased, but exports from the northeastern state of India to the neighbouring country had substantially declined in recent years.
The minister had said that Tripura imported various commodities worth ₹636.72 cr from Bangladesh in FY23, and the volume increased to ₹703.67 cr in FY24 and till February of the current fiscal (2024-25), it was ₹625.14 cr.
