Tripura government will expedite the process of rehabilitation of over 37,000 Reang tribals.

Around 37,136 displaced Reang tribals comprising 6,959 families are being rehabilitated in 12 locations in Tripura’s four of the eight districts – North Tripura, Dhalai, Gomati and South Tripura.

A senior government official said that by the target of resettlement which was August 31 could not be met due to various problems. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the implementation of the quadripartite agreement with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha in Delhi on Tuesday.

The official said that so far 3,696 of the 6,959 families have been resettled and the rest are in the process of resettlement. House construction completed for 2,407 families so far besides those under construction.

As per the resettlement agreement signed in New Delhi 2020, all the Brus who refused to return to Mizoram and chose to remain in Tripura were allowed to do so. They were to be provided with rehabilitation packages similar to those who had returned to Mizoram during the government-sponsored repatriation process.

Thousands of Bru refugees from Mizoram stayed on in Tripura following ethnic clashes in 1997.
