Advocates have decided to boycott proceedings at the High Court on Wednesday, stepping up their protests over the transfer of four judges serving in Bengaluru to other states. The Advocates Association at Bangalore has asked colleagues in Dharwad and Kalburgi too to join the protest in solidarity.

On Tuesday, members of the bar, which included some veterans too, held a protest demonstration outside the High Court in Bengaluru, halting their work for about an hour.

The protests came in response to the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to transfer four judges.

The SC Collegium had on April 21 recommended transfer of Justices Krishna S Dixit, K Natarajan, Sanjay Gowda and Hemanth Chadangoudar, which sparked disapproval within the legal fraternity. The collegium has recommended transfer of Justice Dixit to Orissa High Court, Justice Natararajan to Kerala HC, Justice Hemant Chandangoudar to Madras HC and Justice Gowda to Gujarat “to infuse inclusivity and diversity at the level of High Courts and to strengthen the quality of administration of justice.”

The Advocates Associations at both Bengaluru and Dharwad have written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), opposing the move.
