Assam police firing leaves two personnel dead, two injured; two suspected thieves killed in separate encounter

Guwahati: Two Assam police personnel were killed and two others injured after a colleague open fired in Assam's Kamrup district.

A senior police officer said that the incident took place at the Gamerimura Police Outpost under the jurisdiction of Boko Police Station at late night on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Fazrul Ali and Indrajit Bora, the officer-in-charge of the Gamerimura Police Outpost.


The official said that the firing was allegedly carried out by a police personnel identified as Chiranjeev Choudhury using an AK-47 rifle. " The reason for open fire is not known yet. A detailed investigation is expected to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the firing and the circumstances under which the service weapon was used."

In another incident two suspected vehicle thieves were killed in an exchange of fire with Assam Police in Sonapur on Thursday.

Official said that the incident took place at Marakdola under Sonapur police station after police intercepted a vehicle allegedly stolen from Guwahati's Fancy Bazar area. The deceased has been identified as Saidul Alom Laskar of Cachar and Babu Singh of Imphal, Manipur.

Police recovered two pistols, including one suspected to be locally made, two live rounds, mobile phones and equipment allegedly used for stealing vehicles from the vehicle.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Anurag Sarma, the Officer-in-Charge of Panbazar police station received information through the emergency helpline number 112 about the theft of the vehicle and subsequently alerted other police stations. “Later the police received information that the stolen vehicle was heading towards Sonapur via Digaru. Accordingly a naka was set up near the Marakdola forest camp,”

Sarma said," At around 3 am, the police spotted the vehicle .When we tried to stop it, they jumped the naka and rammed into a concrete pillar. When police approached the vehicle, they started firing indiscriminately. To protect ourselves, we returned fire, during which two persons were injured and subsequently died.” Sarma said.
