Times Internet Half Marathon: How running with a group can help you run further and stay consistent!

How running with a group can help you run further and stay consistent!
There’s a simple reason people sometimes run further with a group: leaving becomes harder when someone is expecting you.

On your own, skipping a run requires little explanation. You can blame a late night, a busy morning or bad weather and try again tomorrow. When three or four people are already waiting at the usual meeting point, the decision becomes less private. That small social pressure can be surprisingly effective.

Accountability gets you out the door

The first benefit of running with others isn't physical but rather getting started. A regular group creates a commitment outside your own motivation. You don't have to feel particularly enthusiastic about running that morning. You just have to turn up.

Over time, that distinction matters. A run that might have been postponed becomes part of the week's routine. Consistency starts to depend less on how motivated you feel on a particular day.

Running alongside others can also change how effort feels. When everyone is moving at a similar pace, there's less temptation to start too quickly or constantly check your watch. The conversation, rhythm and movement of the group provide useful cues.

For newer runners, this can make longer distances less intimidating. They don't have to think about covering the entire route at once. They simply stay with the group and let the distance accumulate. For experienced runners, training partners can provide the opposite challenge. A familiar route can become an opportunity to test pace, endurance or simply run further than usual.

Distance feels different when someone is beside you

There is a psychological difference between deciding to run another two kilometres alone and doing it with someone who says, "Let's keep going."

The distance hasn't changed, but your perception of it has.

Conversation can distract from fatigue. A shared pace can make effort feel more controlled. Knowing that others are working towards the same finish can also make difficult stretches easier to manage. This is particularly relevant when runners move from 5K to 10K, or from 10K towards a half marathon. The challenge isn't only physical. It's learning that a distance that initially seems excessive can be broken into smaller, manageable sections.

The group can become part of the goal

The most effective running groups don't need everyone to have the same target. One runner might be preparing for a first 5K, another could be chasing a 10K personal-best. Someone else may be building towards a 21K half marathon. They can still run together. A shared environment is one reason organised races and running communities work so well together. A race provides the destination. The group helps make the journey easier to sustain.

For participants preparing for the Times Internet Half Marathon, that could mean finding a local running group, training with friends or simply having someone who expects to see you at the next weekend run.

The kilometres still have to be covered, but when someone is waiting at the start, showing up becomes easier and sometimes, that's what takes you further.
