Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said three civic bodies may replace the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to manage the civic affairs of the city.

The CM, talking to the media, said the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, has taken effect on May 15, and Bengaluru would, in future, be called Greater Bengaluru.

Thursday was also the birthday of Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru city development portfolio.

Siddaramaiah added he would chair the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), and appropriate decisions related to the GBA would follow in the days to come.

Both the Houses of the Legislature had, in March, passed the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024. The bill seeks to improve the quality of life of citizens by instituting a decentralised governance framework.

The Congress regime passed the bill to overhaul the governance structure of BBMP to manage the city’s affairs better. The bill proposes the GBA for supervising and coordinating the greater Bengaluru area.

The bill paves the way for setting up seven separate city municipal corporations in place of the unwieldy BBMP and doubling the municipal area of Bengaluru.
