Guwahati: Thousands of people participated in a protest rally on Tuesday in Manipur's Imphal against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, and the recent killings of civilians.

The rally, held on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, started from the Thau Ground and culminated at the Khuman Lampak Stadium.

Five organisations, including All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association, Committee on Human Rights and Manipur Students' Federation, had organised the rally.

People from different communities and from relief camps participated in the rally. The protestors held placards with messages such as 'Repeal AFSPA', 'Do not obliterate Manipur', 'Save Manipur', etc.

The Centre re-imposed AFSPA in six police station jurisdictions of the Imphal Valley last month, including the violence-hit Jiribam.
