Devmali village in Rajasthan's Beawar district has been named India’s Best Tourist Village. Recognized for its unique cultural heritage and dedication to Lord Devanarayan, the village stands out for its distinct way of life. The award will be presented by the central government on November 27 in Delhi.

Unique Village with No Permanent Houses

Devmali is known for its deep-rooted traditions and strict cultural practices. The village spans around 3,000 bighas, all of which are considered the property of Lord Devanarayan. Despite living here for generations, the villagers do not hold any land ownership documents, adhering to the belief that the land belongs solely to their deity.

Residents have committed to a promise made to Lord Devanarayan, resulting in a lifestyle that eschews permanent structures. There are no concrete houses in Devmali; instead, all homes are built with mud and thatch roofs. No one consumes non-vegetarian food or alcohol, and the use of kerosene and neem wood for burning is strictly prohibited.

Community with Trust and Devotion

Devmali's sense of community and trust is highlighted by the absence of locks on homes. As reported, the village has not seen any incidents of theft or robbery in decades, a reflection of the community’s faith and commitment to their traditions.

The central attraction of the village is the hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Devanarayan, drawing thousands of visitors each year. According to local legends, the villagers made a pact with Lord Devanarayan not to construct permanent homes, a vow that continues to shape their lives today.

The Best Tourism Village award considers factors such as popularity among tourists and the preservation of local culture, where Devmali emerged as a standout. The only permanent structures in the village are government buildings and the temple, underscoring the community’s dedication to their customs.

The award ceremony on November 27 will honor Devmali’s unique cultural identity and its role in promoting India’s heritage as a tourist destination.
