The Prime Minister firmly exuded confidence that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will make efforts to meet the aspirations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated President Droupadi Murmu ahead of her maiden President’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament. He sought the Opposition’s cooperation for smooth conduct of the session and hoped members would engage in well-researched debates.

Addressing the media before the session kicked off on Tuesday, Modi said, “at the start of the budget session of 2023, the positive message coming from those whose voices matter is one of ray of hope and enthusiasm. It is also an important occasion today. This will be the first address of the new President to the joint sitting of Parliament. Her speech is a matter of pride for the constitutional and parliamentary process of India, and especially the respect for women.”

The occasion was a matter of pride for those living in far flung forests and following the tribal traditions, for all parliamentarians and the entire nation. He appealed to members to fully cooperate with her. “The convention established in the last 6-7 decades is that when a new MP speaks for the first time in the House, whichever party he/she may come from, the whole House supports and creates a conducive atmosphere. This is a very good convention. This is her first address and it is our duty to ensure this is done,” he said.

He expressed confidence that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet the expectations of the people in her budget to be presented on Wednesday. “Our finance minister is also a woman. She will present the budget tomorrow. In the current global economic situation, not just India but the whole world has its eyes on it. In the uncertainties of the present global economy today, India’s budget will not only meet expectations of the people here but also on the world stage. I am confident Nirmala Sitharaman will make all efforts to meet the expectations,” he said.

BJP’s motto has always been, “India first, citizen first”, he said and asked the Opposition to not just protest but engage in fruitful debates as well. “In this budget session, there will be conflicts but along with it there should also be debates (Takrar rahegi, lekin takreer bhi honi chahiye). I am sure our friends from the Opposition will present their views in Parliament after careful study and preparation. These debates in Parliament, I am sure, will bring out amrit,” he said.
