Thar Desert turns green after unseasonal rains; greenery lures vibrant butterflies to Jaisalmer

The usually dry Thar Desert in Jaisalmer district is transforming into a lush green haven this year, thanks to early rainfall brought by wester disturbances, the Biparjoy cyclone, and pre-monsoon activities in May and June. This unusual greenery has not only caught the eye of locals but has also enticed a variety of colorful butterflies to the region.

According to local nature enthusiasts, large gatherings of Green Mottled Emigrant and Common Emigrant butterflies are now a common sight. These butterflies typically migrate from northern India to the grasslands of central and southern regions. In an interview with TOI, Dr. Sumit Dookia, the chief honorary scientist at the ERDS Foundation, mentioned that this dual butterfly migration was last observed in September 2020.

In the same interview, Parth Jagani, a naturalist and district coordinator of the ERDS Foundation, shared that around 45 butterfly species are currently thriving in the district's grasslands and Sacred Oran groves.


Explaining the phenomenon, Dr. Shyam Meena, a professor at SBK College in Jaisalmer, pointed out that the timely rainfall has prompted local grasses and shrubs to flourish, providing ample Larval Host Plants (LHPs) for butterflies and moths to breed successfully in greater numbers.

Dr. Meena went on to note that not only the common Emigrant species but also rarely spotted varieties like Desert Grizzly Skipper, Blue Mormon, Common Blue, and Tawny Silver Line have shown a remarkable breeding success rate this year.

"These developments signify a thriving and diverse ecological balance within the desert grasslands. The recent planting of lemon, bilvapatra, and curry neem in the city and gardens has also contributed to increased numbers of Lime Butterflies," Dr. Meena emphasized.

The remarkable transformation of the Thar Desert into a verdant landscape has not only offered respite from its arid reputation but has also unveiled the hidden beauty of butterfly life in the region. As the desert continues to bloom, it's not only the local inhabitants who are enjoying the vibrant spectacle – it's also the graceful butterflies that have found an unexpected paradise in Jaisalmer's green embrace.
