Thailand and Cambodia agree on ceasefire to end weeks of deadly fighting
“Both sides (Thailand and Cambodia) have jointly agreed on key measures, including a ceasefire to take effect from 12:00 p.m. (0500 GMT) today. The most important point in this joint statement is that both sides will maintain their current troop positions, with no movement or reinforcement towards each other, and no renewed attacks or provocations.” “There will be monitoring and observation of the ceasefire for 72 hours to confirm that it is taking place and remains in effect. Once the situation has stabilised, civilians will be able to safely return to their homes. After that, the 18 Cambodian soldiers will be released, in accordance with international principles that require release following the end of hostilities.” “At the policy level, there will be direct communication via a hotline between the defence ministers and the commanders-in-chief of both sides. If necessary, senior representatives from both sides will be deployed to the area to jointly resolve any issues.”
