A senior police official said the two persons had gone to repair a water pipeline in the area when they went missing. The deceased were identified as Thangboimang Khongsai, 35, a resident of Shangkai village in Ukhrul district, and Thengin Baite, 40, a resident of nearby Thawai Kuki village in Kamjong district.

Chief minister Yumnam Khemchand informed the assembly that the state government will hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough and impartial investigation. Singh said that an ex-gratia will also be provided to the two deceased persons as per the rules of the state government. The CM was replying to a calling attention motion on the incident moved by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader K Meghachandra Singh.

Earlier, state home minister Govindas Konthoujam said that the 21 Tangkhul Naga civilians were rescued safely after the Union home ministry stepped in. Speaking in the assembly, Konthoujam said the hostages were freed early Thursday following negotiations and intervention by central forces.
